PHYSICAL NEEDS
Protection from Violence
Without Our Place, teens in our care would be on the streets, susceptible to drug dealers and criminals every day. Safety first: we take care to ensure that teens who may pose a danger to others are not admitted, and our staff maintains a peaceful, violence-free space conducive to growth.
Dinner
Since many teens don't have a functional family situation, we provide a nutritious hot supper every night–family-style, around a table.
Our Place Hotline
The crises that unfortunately occur don't keep regular hours. We maintain a 24/7 Our Place hotline, where a staff member can be reached at any time 718 692 4058.
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Gym
Exercise is an important outlet for teens. Our modern gym is fully stocked with equipment for both strength and resistance training including weights, exercise balls, and more.
Movie Night
Girls regularly enjoy a relaxing night out at the local movie theater.
Aerobics & Yoga
Periodically, aerobics and yoga instructors offer on-site classes.
Entertainment Center
A large-screen monitor for in-house movie nights, Wii gaming, and karaoke provide nightly fun and contribute to the relaxing and homey atmosphere.
Film Making
A recent addition to our recreational programs, this is a project to learn about film making through creating documentary films.
PSYCHOSOCIAL GUIDANCE
Counseling
Many of our teens suffer from past trauma, mental health issues, and addiction problems. Substance abuse counseling and preventive counseling are provided on-site by multiple licensed therapists.
One on One Volunteers
Our mentoring program operates under the supervision of a certified social worker. Volunteers work with teens one-on-one, as well as, in groups, spending time together once a week. Teens have the chance to develop a relationship and learn healthy behaviors from their mentors.
Placement
Our Place is often instrumental in placing our teenagers in schools, vocational programs, and when appropriate, jobs. Girls Our Place employs a professional job placement counselor on staff.
Pet Therapy
Animals are brought in along with licensed therapists and trainers to interact with members in a meaningful way. This popular form of therapy is especially meaningful and impactful for teenage girls who enjoy their furry friends!
TRIPS + GETAWAYS
Trips
Trips are planned monthly, some for the general membership, and some for our Learning Program. These include skiing in Vermont, fishing on a chartered boat, paintball, etc.
Weekend Retreats
Shabbatonim are an opportunity to form bonds with staff and each other and to experience their heritage in a positive way.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Holiday Celebrations
Festive celebrations are held prior to every Yom Tov to help members foster a connection with Judaism in a positive environment. These benefits members who have negative associations with holidays and allows them to view the Yamim Tovim in a new light.
Shabbos
Meals are often held on Shabbos allowing members to have a meaningful Shabbos experience in a casual, family-oriented manner. Spending Shabbos together helps facilitate warm memories and encourages positive feelings toward Shabbos and one's Jewish heritage. On occasion, immersive Shabbatons are arranged as an opportunity to form meaningful bonds with both staff members and friends.
