WE BEGAN WITH A SIMPLE PREMISE:

Meet them where they are. Guide them toward health and healing.

In 1998 several community activists recognized that there were boys landing up on the streets of Brooklyn for a myriad of reasons including family issues and trouble in their Yeshivos. The main issues at that time were marijuana use and truancy. In addition, house parties were rampant and many teens were literally homeless with nowhere to hang out, leaving them to the dangers of what the streets had to offer. Spearheaded and funded by Moshe Binik, Z”L, the team jumped into action and created a drop in center that would provide a safe environment and hot meals along with an amazing game room to occupy their time.
Hard at work, the team approached many Rabbonim including the Novominkske Rebbe ztk'l who gave their overwhelming approval to move forward. Several lay leaders including Mr. Shimon Lefkowitz got to work and Our place was born. The first challenge was to provide a place where all these kids could hang out as an alternative to the streets. The streets were and continue to be, filled with teenagers using drugs and hanging out until all hours of the night. Based on the phenomenal success of Our Place within 5 years a separate girls place was created. Under the guidance of Rabbi Shimon Russel, LCSW, the staff was trained with his expertise in his clinical leadership which brought us to new levels. Once in full swing, the need to open a place for teens in recovery was desperately needed and the newest addition was created under the name The Living Room, giving new hope to Jewish kids in recovery.
As the years passed we observed far more serious issues with addiction and psychiatric disorders. Most of our male and female consumers have been exposed to overwhelming trauma and have experienced dysfunctional relationships in school and in their personal lives. Our staff, once made up of volunteers and caring community members, has grown to include therapists and addiction professionals. As the needs of the community have grown, we have expanded our 12-step recovery programs to Long Island and Monsey and added a sober home in Rockland County. Our extensive network enables us to place adolescents and young adults in therapy, vocational services, yeshiva, college, and inpatient rehabilitation. It takes a village–and that’s what we are.
